Photo du Jour: if it's Wednesday, this must be Copenhagen

CPH_in_SF

This chictastic blondie made me double check what city I was in. She carried an oversized art book about Moab, Utah in her big basket.

Sunday Streets: Made Possible By Susan King

Sunday Streets, a few hours a few times a year when selected surface streets are closed to cars, continues to be the best event in San Francsico. Susan King is the director of SS and is pictured here looking cute while eating some Girl Scout Cookies.
yeah, this is my party.
When it comes to fashion,  for Susan it's all about the bike.  She produces stellar basket installation art for her ride.  Her most recent creation, Crab Catchin'.

Take Your Dog To Work Day!

Meet Rookie!
Rookie Panda with Jaguar

And please congratulate him on his first bike ride - EVER! Rookie is the adorable chihuahua mix that I fostered and am in the process of adopting. He is a great passenger/co-pilot (not a back-seat driver at all) as he remained quiet the entire way from my house near Golden Gate Park to my office in SF's Financial District.
Rookie Panda

My friend Kay lent me her Basil pet carrier that she picked up at Warm Planet. It's sturdy, sizeable, safe and comfy enough to accommodate your furry friend. I like that the basket attaches to a rear rack so your dog can chill out and not be distracted by looking into your face. That way it's actually safer for you too.
Rookie Panda

We had a fun time on our morning commute. I think I'll bike to work with Rookie more often.

classic|eclectic

The post-modern goes classic and the classic goes eclectic on Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

So Cal's got this classic and elegant line of city bikes called Linus Bikes.

They're perfect.

OK, almost perfect. A couple scratches on a city bike are inevitable!

Schwinn gets funky! Leopard print basket liner and all!

I've seen these baskets at SF MoMa. I don't know who makes them, what they're called or where else to get them.

With these bikes, it's all about the quirky accoutrements. And the polka dots!

[Christy Bockheim Meuzelaar]: Wedding on 2 Wheels

Un mariage en vélo! Congrats to Christy and hubby and good luck on the many paths you will explore together! Thanks for sharing these images and commentary with us!

I've been a fan of your blog for a while, and wanted to share some photos with your readers of our bicycle-themed wedding over the weekend.

Our invitations and programs featured a tandem bike drawn by my sister, our cupcake stand was shaped like a bicycle, and after the ceremony we rode off on a tandem bike!

It was a big hit - even my nieces wanted to try it out!

[Rod Kenny] Guest Photo: Cat in a Basket

Or should I say going to hell in a handbasket! Hats off to Rod Kenny of Vancouver for training Shadow to stay put and go along for the ride!

Here's what Rod has to say about this amazing feat: This is Shadow's favorite sleeping place. I took him for a ride one night and he seemed to like it. I think the trick is to let them get used to sitting in it first. So, I then I started easy by just pushing my bike up and down the hall with him in the back, and he seemed to really dig it. Lacking a proper cage, I devised a netting system with bamboo tied to the corners of the basket so he couldn't jump out, but would get lots of air.

We thought this bike basket liner product was super cute.

on taxi rides and snogging

Friday nights in the Mission: a great time and place to have a few drinks, feel good and hook up (if you're lucky), which is exactly what I think I observed happening in this situation. This woman was with a guy who didn't have his bike (shame on him!) and they were trying to go home together so they quickly hailed a cab and she proceeded to fold her bike into a little compartment to stick in the trunk.

I hope they had some good snogging in the back of the cab, although catching a kiss at every stop sign on the way home, in my humble opinion, is far more romantic.

So is riding double (though I might not attempt that on a folding bike). ;-)

bike of paradise

Another beautiful San Franciscan getting ready to hop on her bicycle, framed by a bird of paradise and other pretty spring flowers.

Grocery shopping à vélo!

And away she goes!

purple shoes/pink purse

Another photo from earlier in the year. This woman either has a liberal sense of color (which I applaud) or this is some kind of hybrid outfit based on something else before/after her ride.

4th and King/Fluttery red skirt

Leaving the Caltrain station at 4th and King in San Francisco one evening, I rode along with this woman in a fluttering red skirt. She had someplace to go in that awesome outfit; so, it was a little work trying to capture her likeness without seeming like a total weirdo. (I sometimes thank my stars we're girls keeping the blog.)

A gentleman riding along side me asked me what I was doing. (I might have been creeping him out.) I explained. He tried to run interference for me, but alas, this was the best photo I got of her with more than 20 shot.

mission rain... again still

These two were riding on a rainy day in the Mission. I was impressed with her skirt mostly.

They clearly know one of the great secrets to getting around SF -- every bus stop has a map of the entire city!

Only after they rode away did I notice his cool arty hoodie.

white basket and skirt

I loved this woman's look biking along Valencia in vintage blue ladies' bike, white summer skirt and floral basket.

I don't think it's just me, but these baskets fill my heart with mist and nostalgia. I don't love plastic, but when I see them in the store my heart fills with joy. My city bike has a metal basket with a Hawaiian lei wrapped through -- it does the trick.

Brian submitted this photo without commentary. He's also the one who first suggested we post about the scrapper bikes. Go Oak-town.

train + vegetables

If this blog has a third subject after bikes and street fashion, it would be food. We talk a lot about groceries and local produce. I don't know what she's carrying--sporting a sparkly scarf, skirt and cute earrings, but it doesn't look like it came from a big box.

faire les courses en vélo

I was sipping a glass of Côtes du Rhône at Cafe du Soleil avec Marie-Lyse, when I saw this cyclist zip by carrying a cargo load of groceries. She made riding up Fillmore look not only easy with her front basket and rear pannier but also stylish in a pair of plaid flats. Seeing her running her errands en vélo like that reminded me of all the fantastic merchants in SF who offer discounts to SF Bicycle Coalition members (who arrive on their bikes).
