ode to vancouver

With the Winter Olympics in full swing in one of my favorite cities in the world, I find myself a bit nostalgic. So I went back into the archives to find a few more shots of our cool neighbors to the North. Here are the gold medal winners I found:

P1050770
Hipster girl with hat cruising Commercial Drive on a BMX.

P1050775
Locking her loved one to a sign post. Great pink helmet!

P1050773
Taking her bike for a stroll on the sidewalk.

P1050780
And this bike should win a medal for its vibrant custom color combination!

P1050779
Vancouver is a cycle chic gold medal winner!

Not All Lycra Is The Same

I remember the last decade that one would see cabbage rose tank dresses and denim leggings. I was riding a bike for transportation then, too : )

BART Vogue

Bike vogue on transit is definitely its own category. Statistically, this is probably the 24th Street Station, but it looks just like 16th Street.

This chyck caught my eye biking in leggings and short jean skirt which is really a perfect outfit to bike in if you think about it. Her elegant black fixie and ergonomic seat tell their own story.

I love the way this photo came out with the flash keeping some things still with others blurry from the long shutter speed to make up for low light.

meli takes a spin

Fabulous local blogger celeb Meli Burgueño put down the Frenchie momentarily to take a spin on Adrienne's Bat this sunny afternoon when we all met up at the Park Chalet for some cervezitas. Great to see Meli in full support of our Gigantes in black and orange - even on a non-game day.

And get a load of those leggings!

Sacto Vogue

I spent the past weekend in our state capital, Sacramento, CA. Not only did I see beautiful people like this pretty blond in black, and this bmx-er with dog, but I saw bike lanes on both sides of one-way streets (imagine that on Fell or Oak or Folsom!), cute little bike racks installed on parking meters in the downtown area, and folks of all backgrounds riding around to all types of destinations - to bars, to markets, to parks, etc.

People--SF has a lot to learn from this agrarian Central Valley city!

All The Single Ladies

The boys got their chance, the other day. Now let's bring on the women! I like anyone with an obvious sense of style. It does not have to be my style, just obviously their own. This woman looks like someone I want to talk to- open and happy. That is universal style.

Now this woman is owning it! Everything in this picture says "I am happy being me!". How could you not want to grab your bike after seeing her flying through the City?

That's really all style is- making your outside look like your inside and showing it to the world.

Ride on with style, San Francisco : )

Bonne Route!

When we last crossed paths with la belle Caroline, she had a different bike! Unfortunately someone stole her "boyfriend" as she lovingly referred to it.

I think this sleek blue and yellow ride is a nice improvement!

Caroline is leaving San Francisco to live and work in France, but has promised to send us photo updates on the scene in Paris! Bonne chance et bonne continuation, Caroline!

labels

Some people wear YSL, some wear RL, some wear DKNY, some wear CK, and the list goes on. This cyclist, par contre, has her own signature style with a monogrammed purple messenger bag, initials AW. Anyone know her? Super cute look with the black mini, black leggings, black Chucks and white crash helmet.

Tourist Vogue

When people come to visit SF, I encourage them to visit the beach, the bridge and the Ferry Building. A rental bike is perfect for a spin in Golden Gate Park like these ladies have figured out. This visitor looks so chic in while peasant skirt with brown hoodie and leggings.

Rainy Day Vogue

I'm sure this post is the beginning of many documenting how the San Francisco cyclists handle our sometimes-wet winters. Maybe that's unfortunate, or maybe it provides a new angle on this, our art form, both in how we adapt to the weather and how we document those adaptations.

This woman appears unphased, if a bit unpleased, in sports coat, scarf, skirt, leggings or pants, and what looks like leg warmers or knee highs as she rides along milk crate on the back of her bike.

Encore de cupcake (tdc part 2)

As KT already mentioned, the Tour de Cupcake was pretty much the greatest thing that ever happened to anyone. Biking brings out the kid in everyone, but with the addition of cupcakes, you do take the risk of it all just being too much. Here are some kids ready for the ride:

The Bike Kitchen expected about 100 riders. Instead more than 400 showed up. The line was around the block. The wait provided me the opportunity to capture perfectly San Francisco outfits like this yellow mini with arm warmers.

Here's KT in full awesomeness with stylish hat, poncho and her usual vintage town bike with our friend Jeff:

This woman did the ride in heels, knickers and lovely green jacket and purse.
Finally, a few riders were in costume. I walked up to this guy and said "you dressed that way because you didn't want anyone to notice you, right?" He agreed by posing for me. His friend in pink is also fabulous.

I have enough photos for at least one more post. So, sit tight.

l'amour à vélib'

It all starts with a little flirtation at a red light.

Then he'll whisk you off on the back of his bike to a romantic corner of the city where you've never been before.

Then, after a fabulous four-course meal, he'll charm you as you gaze upon the lights on the Seine.

(This couple was out on their bicycles at about 2 a.m. right in front of Notre Dame. One great benefit of the Vélib' program is that you can take a bike to get around town even after the last metro.)
