Morgan's Magical History Tour

Professor Morgan Fitzgibbons, founder of SF's Wigg Party, took a group of us on a magical history tour today from the Mission to the Haight, the neighborhoods adjoined by the bike route that San Franciscans adoringly call The Wiggle.

Morgan's community activism is centered around the idea that we all must be resilient in building more sustainable communities, much like his predecessors, the Diggers, about whose legacy we learned on his tour today.

Even those of us who ride The Wiggle every day learned a thing or two about the history of this famous zig-zag that makes mountains into molehills.

We also learned about some of the plans for improvement on The Wiggle, potentially including a roundabout at this very intersection at Scott & Page.

It's people like Morgan who preserve San Francisco's integrity, connecting the high-tech city of today to its roots in creative community activism of the 60s and 70s.

So thanks for getting us all together again for an enlightening and empowering day, Morgan! Ride on!

The Flower Bandit Strikes!

When was the last time something totally unexpected happened to you and brightened your day? For me, it was yesterday. I went to my usual Monday night yoga class at the gym, and when I emerged, there was a gorgeous yellow rose attached to my handlebars. flowerbandit

It felt like I had a secret admirer! When I went to unlock from the bike rack, I noticed that my admirer had left me a sweet message, with an invitation to art and party!

I ride the Wiggle almost every day. It's an infamous strip of bike route in the Lower Haight that makes commuting home sane and reasonable. It's also a great place to run into bike friends. A group of forward-thinking residents of the Wiggle have organized a party, appropriately called the Wigg Party.

Self-described as "Urban Sustainability Guerrillas," here's a little more background: "The Wigg Party is a community organization based in the San Francisco neighborhoods surrounding the bike route known as the Wiggle. Our mission is to make the community that uses the Wiggle a leader in the transformation to sustainability and resilience." They sound like my kind of people.

This week on Thursday, April 12th, the party is going down at The Independent, also the same night as the Divisadero Art Walk. So really, how could you go wrong?

Join the Wigg Party's facebook page to stay informed. And come out to party on Thursday!

And thanks to the Wiggs for adorning my bike with a fragrant flower!

KT Rocks The Bike with Adam Pastana

Best part about riding the bike routes in SF is running into your friends just like that. The Wiggle is one of the best places for that to happen, especially when your friend's bike is jammin' out the sweet tunes!

Here's an ode to one of the best strips of runway in SF:

Cyclists criss-cross streets
Cars and busses stop for us
Wiggle is the way

i love haighters

Here's a lesson on how to turn left while looking incredibly hip in the Lower Haight.

First, dye your hair orange. Then jump into some short shorts and hop on your bike.

To keep your legs and arms warm in case the fog rolls in, slip into some legwarmers and fingerless 3/4 length gloves. Make a left turn signal.

Make sure to look for oncoming traffic when you cross the intersection (also scanning the Wiggle for other cuties en vélo.)

A unique style in a unique part of town. I simply love the Haight!

nifty knits

Striped legwarmers over leggings, and fingerless gloves! Uniquely painted rear basket! Very fantastic and very SF!

When these bright colors cruised by me one late afternoon, it felt a bit like Santa Claus was coming to town.

back in black

She even smiled for the camera as she stylishly signaled a left hand turn, dressed in black from head to toe, matching her bicycle. The polka-dotted flats and Audrey Hepburn sunglasses made the outfit.

Easter Best

This young lady rolled out of bed last Sunday morning and began working on her bike. I rode past and noticed her immediately, all pink and yellow, even her hair matched! She was relucant at first to have her photo take bc she'd just woken up, but I thought that was so part of her charm.

dress over pants look

I had pulled to the curb to answer a phone call from Lilia, my VV partner in crime, when I spotted this woman at the corner of Broderick and Oak. Lilia understood and quickly let me go chase this fashionable cyclist through what we SFers fondly call The Wiggle. I finally caught up with her in front of Duboce Park. Her choice of a red Vietnamese silk mini-dress over black velvet pants is a good one for San Francisco, because no matter what the season, the evenings get chilly as soon as the sun goes down. So I applaud her choice for keeping her legs cozy and warm for the imminent nightfall, while flaunting her personal style by day.
