Photo du Jour: if it's Wednesday, this must be Copenhagen

CPH_in_SF

This chictastic blondie made me double check what city I was in. She carried an oversized art book about Moab, Utah in her big basket.

tight squeeze?

If you commute up and down busy Market Street every day like I do, you get used to scenarios such as this one:

tightsqueeze

Many cyclists eeking out their place between other cyclists, busses, streetcars, train tracks, pedestrians, autos and taxis, with a fading sharrow leading our way. Dangerous and intimidating to say the least.

But wait - has our call for help (and justice) been answered? This just in: Bikes Belong has selected San Francisco (among 6 U.S. cities) to receive a protected bike lane. Let us all rejoice (and hold our breath while biking on one of SF's worst streets for cyclists) until our prototype for future bike lanes arrives and some sense is knocked into our administrators' brains when they see how happy and harmonious all commuters are when they each have their own designated space.

And by the way, lady, cute mini!

Not much difference in the seasons here between fall and winter here in Cali.

If you're in SF, hope this terrible wind doesn't knock you over. :-)

black and white and having a ball

The fitting word for SF fashion is "unique."

I happened upon these two during a random street fair on Market Street.

Happy Friday, yo!

Re-cycle!

I've seen this bicycle parked at the Hayes Valley Farm. In San Francisco, I have the sense that we are evolving into a more liveable city.

Welcome Anne!

Anne, here, is a transplant from New York. She said she was too intimidated to ride a bicycle there, but when she moved here last year, she started to think about maybe taking it up here.

Anne The Newbie

Anne bought her bicycle just the week before I took this picture. Already a complete natural! I think she will do very well pedaling around our fair town.

Maneuvering Market Street

Market Street - SF's main drag, and what a mess! Potholes, taxis, jaywalkers, busses, streetcars... and us - the cyclists! It can prove to be daunting for some, but once you get the hang of it, the only way to do Market Street is in style.

The first day of her visit, I coaxed my cousin Tiffany from Minneapolis to ride up and down Market. All the hustle and bustle nearly gave her a heart attack, but she came out smiling and lives to tell!

If you do it every day, being followed by a large Muni bus ain't no thang.

When all is said and done, however, I do love the improvements to Market so far. The separated green bike lanes (though confusing crossovers at times) make for a safer commute, especially on the blocks closed to cars. I look forward to the day when Tiffany will be able to cruise Market without the threat of vehicular traffic.

Morning Commute

IMAG0750 This was my ride down Market Street in San Francisco this morning.  There were as many cyclists behind me as there were in front of me.  These are all commuters, the most technical clothing item, a windbreaker.  Shoes not clipped in, not toe clipped.  This is bike culture happening before our eyes.  Build the lanes, the bikes will come.

YANKEES WIN!

The purpose of this video is to inspire you to get on your bike and go support your team Saturday morning/afternoon!

The Kristen/ins show their team and their World Cup 2010 boyfriends they love them by braving the cold and fog at 7 am, AND being the only two fans in their parade down Market Street to support the USA's BIG WIN against Algeria.

World Cup drama really doesn't get any better than this. Go homeboys!

Sometimes I don't know why he hates this classic design so much, but then at other times, I totally get it.

Luckily there are some other styles out there that don't make your eyes go criss-crossed.

ladies' night

Hello my dear readers! Your good ol' KT is suffering a horrible, terrible, no-good, very bad week. I'm super low on sleep and energy. So, instead of writing much about these fine ladies of the night, I'll let you just gawk at their two-wheeled beauty.

one less car on market street

onelesscar2
This holiday season I am celebrating with many other SFers the awesome changes to our city streets, thanks to the amazing efforts from bike advocates and the cooperation of the powers-that-be!

How refreshing to cruise down several blocks on Market Street without having to fight for space with cars, and hello! Our first separated bike lane!!!

What a way to roll in the holiday season!

dreams on wheels

Like this cyclist, I keep noticing this ad on the back of Muni buses. So I thought it was time to investigate. Looks like a trip to City Hall in the next week is in order!

dream on wheels

Dreams on Wheels is currently riding towards San Francisco City Hall’s South Light Court.

Open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except for 26 and 27 November.

The exhibit will coincide with the United Nations International Climate Conference set for 3-14 December in Copenhagen.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) in conjunction with the Embassy of Denmark , Washington, D.C. will bring the acclaimed exhibit Dreams on Wheels to San Francisco City Hall beginning November 19. Developed by curator Thomas Ermacora in collaboration with Danish architect and urban design consultant Jan Gehl, Dreams on Wheels showcases Danish cycling culture and Denmark’s commitment to sustainability via urban design that promotes active transportation.

The Dreams on Wheels exhibit has made an international journey, most recently stopping in London and Portland, Oregon. The exhibit merges urban cycling culture, design intelligence and environmental consciousness and features case studies on how cycling has affected Danish culture. It also considers the history and social development of biking as a viable transportation alternative.
