Sometimes I don't know why he hates this classic design so much, but then at other times, I totally get it.

the his and hers of cycle chic

A couple cyclists in this bunch caught my eye one morning commute (as a matter of fact, hats off to all of them)!


His: Dark denim jeans, plaid cotton shirt, fire engine red socks, polished brown leather dress shoes (and cutie in a hat in front of him).


But really, it's all about the socks.


Hers: Flowing, layered skirt in shades of violet with cool helmet and black pumps.

What I like about my bike: the stickers! and the plastic basket with flowers :)
Cycling in SF: I go almost everywhere on my bike, it is my favorite mode of transit. Most of my biking is to work and other destinations in my life, though my favorite recreational ride is to the beach, which I try to do at least once a month.
Time and place to ride: everyday, though I especially enjoy evening rides on those rare warm San Francisco nights.
Color: Green! Period Green (also my birthstone)
Bike Fashion accessory: I prefer skirts with bike shorts under them when it is warm enough for skirts.
Artist most commonly played on iPod: well, I don't have an iPod, but one of my fave bike tunes is Bike with no Handle bars by the Flobots. My fave rocking biking song is Sweet Child of Mine by Guns & Roses.
Personal Style: "Slightly disheveled", I've incorporated this into an overall look that I am comfortable with. Usual attire: Jeans (new fave style, peg leg, slim, med-low rise Levis), pearl button cowboy shirt, pointy boots or sneakers (depends on mood and where I need to be), blazer or hoodie (or both). Also, skirt with aforementioned bike shorts, blouse, sneakers and socks if I can get away with it (Sun Sreets days, for instance), Mary Janes if not.
Velo Vogue tip of the day: Everything is better with Bacon! Oh, you mean fashion tip? Really, don't ask me for fashion advice, if given, do the opposite - you'll be fine.

Tally-ho Tweed! (pt. 1)

I finally made it to my first Tweed Ride! Thanks to our stylish and sexy pal Colin for organizing once again!


I arrived a tad late, so I missed the show by the Derailleurs, but I found a great slideshow online from the SF Weekly.


After the show, all the beautiful people got a chance to meet and greet and strike a pose.


This was kind of a Vélo Vogue paradise!


Tweed, plaid and argyle never looked so good.


Fine looking people have fine conversations.


And then, the ride began... more to come!

going to market

It's one of the most highly bike-trafficked streets in SF, and one of the most un-bike-friendly! But we bike commuters go at twice daily to and from work.

I try to have conversations with other cyclists, but I'm often too afraid that any distraction might cause a collision with a pedestrian, the Muni, a taxi, a delivery vehicle, a tour bus or car door. So I stick to photography. ;-)

A tourist once asked me if it was safe to bike Market Street. My response: "There's definitely a system. And you figure it out quickly!"

Check out these two Colorado cruiser girls riding home from the Fort Collins downtown farmer's market, Alison with a peacock feather tee and green flair skirt and Lauren with a pink animal helmet, pink shorts and pink flip flops!

This light blue and white Raleigh cruiser and kid bike attachment comes complete with a wicker basket to hold delicious summer produce and rainbow handlebar streamers to celebrate all-out cycling fun.

Summer in PDX is actually hot! This cyclist stops in the center of downtown to take an important phone call.


Flip flops are the tell-tale sign of summer.


This pic was the first one that I snapped when I got off the light rail in downtown. Fantastic green cruiser displaying that casual Pacific NW style!


Portland ladies carry a certain casual elegance.

Two girlfriends make evening plans in the middle of Market Street. One waits for Muni. The other swiftly hops on her blue vintage bike. Who do you think arrives first?

20th and Capp

Years ago, this little intersection was a hub for a rather unsightly form of entertainment. The city renovated the adjacent park and put a community garden there to increase the community's feeling of connection to public space. However, gentrification is probably more the reason for the spot's shift.

Capp is a great little street to ride your bike down. It isn't an official bike route, but it's very close to Mission, quiet, straight, flat and the pavement is pretty good. Perfect San Francisco Victorians line a good bit of it. I saw a couple Voguers here recently, but what I like most about those photos is how much they look like San Francisco as opposed to any other city.

Here, she rides with green skirt flowing in the wind, boots and shoulder bag below a row of Victorians at various levels of "improved."

This guy rode in a blue dress shirt and slacks, baseball cap and backpack.

Of course, I wish he wouldn't ride on the sidewalk.

SFers are indeed inventive, using all sorts of household items in artistic and handy ways! Shining example, this pretty woman's use of a shiny aluminum wash tub for a rear basket. It's got me thinking about the very visible inventiveness of our city's cyclists, and wondering when our city's officials will open their eyes and see how simple solutions - just like this washtub - could make our rides so much more convenient and fun.

Tourist Vogue

When people come to visit SF, I encourage them to visit the beach, the bridge and the Ferry Building. A rental bike is perfect for a spin in Golden Gate Park like these ladies have figured out. This visitor looks so chic in while peasant skirt with brown hoodie and leggings.

Repeat Impressor

Some people impress me every time I see them. According to Meligrosa, this is Jasmin, and I see her around the Mission all the time. Here she's biking in Noe Valley wearing a skirt and the same coat as the previous post.

Hi Mom!

This pretty blonde lady actually said, "Hi Mom!" to me while I took her photo as she cruised along the Page Street bike lane on her cute hot pink folding bicycle. She's got a classic look with her Audrey Hepburn style sunglasses, knee-length skirt and cardigan sweater, long hair flowing freely in the breeze. Ah! To ride sans stockings, scarf and puffy coat again!
